Spokesman for the Tunisian Presidency Ridha Bouguezzi denied on Saturday Iranian claims that President Béji Caid Essebsi described the Shiite country as "the protector of the Muslim world", state-run news agency Tab reported on Sunday.
This clarification comes in response to reports by Iranian electronic media that Essebsi had dubbed Iran as "the protector of the Muslim world" during his talks with Iranian Minister of Culture, Reza Salhi Amiri.
According to Bouguezzi, the talks focused on the development of co-operation between the two countries.
He added Tunis had called upon Tehran to interact positively with its regional environment, improve its relations with neighbor countries and promote dialogue to contribute to the peaceful settlement of conflicts in the region, particularly in Syria and Yemen, with the objective of restoring peace and stability in the region.
President Béji Caid Essebsi received on Friday Iran's Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Reza Salehi Amiri, on a visit to Tunisia within the framework of the 33rd edition of the Tunis International Book Fair.
