Iraqi refugee gets an early Christmas gift from Somerset

A musician from Somerset has succeeded in sending an early Christmas gift to an Iraqi refugee in Turkey.

James Passey, a singer-songwriter from Somerset, and Ahmed Nizim, who fled war-torn Baghdad for Turkey, struck up an unexpected friendship online when Mr Nizim covered one of Mr Passey's songs.

The song, 'She don't call', was covered by Mr Nizim and posted on YouTube.
It was clear to Mr Passey that the basic talent was there but the guitar Mr Nizim was playing was not a good one and struggled to stay in tune.

Mr Passey, moved by the plight of Mr Nizim, set about raising funding for, and sending, a better quality guitar to him.

He set up a Facebook page asking for donations to offer Mr Nizim a better, second hand, guitar.

The campaign was well supported by the people of Somerset and several offers to help set up the guitar and donations of accessories.

Mr Passey found a suitable guitar and set about getting it set up and shipped to Turkey.

In November 2019 the guitar finally found its way into the grateful hands of Mr Nizim.

Mr Passey said: "It seems the guitar was held up in Turkish customs for a couple of weeks, but Ahmed has got the guitar now.

"I would like to thank all the people who donated money and helped with setting up the guitar, supplying the case and shipping.

"To see the look of joy and pride on Ahmed's face makes it all worthwhile.

"A big thank you to Derek Halliday from Halliday Guitars, Gillingham (Dorset) for setting up the guitar.

"And to Kim Hyde from Sounds of Frome for kindly donating the guitar case."

Mr Passey's good work and kind spirit is reflected in comments from those who donated and supported him.

Helen Bennett, who donated to help buy the guitar, wrote on a Facebook thread: “Well done James Passey.

"You have enabled some of us to feel like we have done a little bit of good.

"These moments are really what life is about."

Kim Hyde, who donated the guitar case, added: “It’s a lovely thing to do. Only glad to be able to help.“

James Passey has recently returned to the recording studio and has his first single 'She don't call', the one covered by Ahmed Nizim, is available on Spotify.
