Shiite militias kidnapped journalist Afrah Shawqi

Writer Mujahid al-Taie asserted on Wednesday that al-Hashd Shiite militias are behind the abduction of the Iraqi journalist Afrah Shawqi.

In a tweet, Taie said that al-Hashd Shiite militias are the one who are wandering in the streets of Baghdad while carrying weapons, adding that they had threatened several journalists and are considered a state within a state.

Earlier, Iraqi journalist Afrah Shawqi was kidnapped from her home in Saydiya city in southwest Baghdad, an Iraqi police source said on Tuesday.

In press statements, the source added that Afrah Shawqi, a reporter for al-Aalem al-Jadeed online newspaper, was kidnapped by an unknown armed group from her residence in Saydiya, Baghdad.

Seven reporters died in Iraq in 2016, out of a total of 57 who died in in conflict areas across the world, according to a recent report by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
