Russian Defense Minister, SDF Commander Discuss Syria

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Mazlum Abdi, the commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), discussed on Wednesday the latest developments in Syria, reports said.

Shoigu, who spoke with Abdi by video conference, told Abdi that Russia has plans to increase the number of its military police near the Turkish-Syrian border, as cited by Interfax.

Russian military police started to enter the northeast of Syria on Wednesday as part of a deal between Moscow and Ankara, which forced the Kurdish fighters to withdraw from the region.

The Russian minister, however, has reassured the Kurdish commander that the security of the civilians will be guaranteed in the Syrian Kurdistan.

According to the report, Russia has also urged the Kurdish forces to adhere to the agreement between Ankara and Moscow which was announced on Tuesday after a six-hour meeting by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

The SDF commander thanked Russia and President Vladimir Putin for "securing the Kurdish people and the steps taken to stop the hostilities," the statement said.
