US Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel Wednesday to Ankara to press Turkey to halt its offensive against Syrian Kurdish fighters, President Donald Trump said Tuesday.

"They are leaving tomorrow," Trump told reporters at the White House, a day after Pence announced the trip without giving a timetable. "We are asking for a ceasefire... We put the strongest sanctions that you can imagine."

The White House issued a statement saying that Pence is expected to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Thursday.

"On October 16, VP Pence will lead a delegation including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, US National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien, and Ambassador James Jeffrey," the statement said.

"In Turkey, the Vice President will voice the Unites States' commitment to reach an immediate ceasefire and the conditions for a negotiated settlement. He'll meet with President Erdogan on Oct. 17th."

Washington slapped sanctions on its NATO ally in a bid to stop an assault triggered by its own abrupt pullout, but Erdogan said the operation would continue until "our objectives have been achieved".

Meanwhile, Russia said Tuesday it was patrolling in areas along the "line of contact" between Syrian and Turkish forces, as the US-led coalition in Syria confirmed it had pulled its troops from the area.

Russia's defense ministry said the patrols were taking place after Syrian government troops took control of the city of Manbij.
