Thousands of Iraqi demonstrators took to streets on Thursday in Balad district of Salahuddin province to protest against the division of administrative districts on a sectarian basis.
demanded the accountability of local clan elders of areas that signed the code
of honor of the Babylon Hotel in Baghdad, which obliged them not to consider
the establishment of Aziz Balad and Al-Salam sub-districts.
The Iraqi demonstrators gave the local government in Salahuddin and the federal government a five-day respite to back-track on such step.
They threatened, if their demands were neglected, to cut off the main road linking the capital city of Baghdad to Mosul, Tikrit and Samarra.
