Johnson calls Iran to immediately release British citizens detained in Tehran

“British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called on Iran to immediately release British citizens imprisoned by Tehran, accusing Tehran of destabilizing the Middle East,” a spokesman for the British prime minister said on Wednesday.

Her husband, Richard Ratcliffe, urged Mr. Johnson to tell his Iranian counterpart "enough is enough" and former foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt said he should call out Iran for its "diplomatic hostage taking".

During his meeting on Thursday with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on sidelines of the United Nation General Assembly 74th session, Johnson called on Rouhani for the immediate release of British-Iranian Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and other dual nationals jailed in Iran, the spokesman said in a statement carried by Western media.

He added that Johnson also raised "deep concern about Iran's destabilizing activity in the region". It includes attacks on the Aramco oil facilities and stressed the need to stop it, said the spokesman.

The meeting came after Mr. Johnson blamed Iran for attacks on Saudi Arabian oil facilities.
