Celtic icon Larsson quits as Helsingborg coach after verbal abuse

Henrik Larsson

Celtic great Henrik Larsson has quit as manager of Swedish side Helsingborg two months after taking charge after receiving verbal abuse from the team’s own fans, the club said in a statement on Friday.

Helsingborg lost to lower league opposition in the Swedish Cup on Thursday, after which Larsson was verbally abused by supporters.

“It is extremely sad that it has come to this. We take verbal abuse very serious and will get to the bottom of this,” club chairman Krister Azelius said.

Larsson made his senior debut at Helsingborg before going on to play for Feyenoord, Celtic, Barcelona and Manchester United. Helsingborg are currently 12th in the Allsvenska, Sweden’s first tier, just above relegation places.

Larsson, dubbed the King of Kings by Celtic fans, scored 242 goals in 315 games for the Scottish side and was top scorer in the league for five of the six seasons he took part.

He also won the Champions League and a La Liga title with Barcelona.
