Anti-Iraq parties involved in protests seeking Basra downfall: MP

MP Mithaq al-Hamidi, representing Basra province, has warned that some parties would get into the protests currently taking place in Basra city seeking the downfall of the city.

In remarks on Tuesday, Hamidi said Basra has its own economic importance that make it a target for other countries, especially those who are against Iraq.

Hamidi said if the province fell into the hands of protesters, especially if were affiliated to anti-Iraq parties, this will affect the country, especially that 85 percent of the oil comes from Basra.

Last year’s protests, according to Hamidi, did not witness any intervention from the police or security forces, despite calls for intervention, which allowed other parties to get involved in the protests.
