Hossein Da'i al-Islam, a member of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), said that the attack carried out by the Revolutionary Guards on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman was a major escalation.

Da'i al-Islam said that the IRGC's attack on the tankers proves again that the mullahs cannot guarantee to remain in power unless they practice repression locally and export terrorism abroad.

"Those who doubt the responsibility of the regime in this war crime are either involved by themselves with the mullahs' regime or have been deceived by this regime," he said.

US accusations

The US has accused Iran of detaining the crew of one of two oil tankers attacked in the Gulf of Oman this week, as the UK also joined in formally blaming the country, saying no other nation or group “could plausibly be responsible,” Patrick Wintour, a diplomatic editor wrote in the Guardian.

Washington claims Iran is behind a succession of recent shipping attacks in the Gulf. It said grainy video published on the US Central Command’s website provided evidence of Iran’s involvement in Thursday’s attacks. The footage purportedly shows an Iranian boat removing an unexploded mine from one of the vessels.

Donald Trump said the attacks had “Iran written all over it”, while António Guterres, the UN secretary general, called for an independent investigation.

Attacks

The attacks occurred around the time Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was meeting with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran.

"The attacks have severely affected the prime minister's reputation as he was trying to be a mediator between the United States and Iran," said the source close to the premier, according to Japan Today. "It is a serious concern, and making mistakes when determining facts is impermissible."

The Japanese government has been requesting the United States for concrete evidence to back its assertion that Iran is to blame for the attacks on two tankers near the Strait of Hormuz.
