German FM arrives in Baghdad to discuss regional tensions

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas arrived on Saturday in Baghdad as he is expected to meet President Barham Saleh and Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi.

Maas has started a four-day Middle East tour as he is expected to go to Tehran on Monday for talks about the nuclear deal.

He is in Baghdad to discuss mutual ties between Germany and Iraq as well as tensions and regional issues of common interests.

Germany as one of the signatories of the JCPOA has been involved in setting up INSTEX, an institution designed to circumvent the reimposed U.S. sanctions that have been reimposed.

Maas said in earlier remarks that his country has taken many measures to help with the reconstruction process in Iraq, estimating the value of Germany’s financial aid to Iraq last year as over 1.5 billion euro.
