President Barham Salih received at As-Salam Palace in Baghdad Iranian Ambassador to Iraq Iraj Masjedi on Sunday, shortly after Salih announced rejecting alignment against Iran in the Arab emergency summit held in Saudi Arabia's Macca.

During the meeting, they discussed the latest political developments in the countries of the region and Arab countries, according to a statement by Salih's office. They also discussed ways to strengthen the friendly relations and cooperation between Iran and Iraq.

"The stance of Iraq and the [way] it tackles the crisis in the region stems from the independence of its national decision and its clear policy to protect the region from escalation and further tensions and crises, in a way that preserves [Iraq's] national interests and protect the stability achieved for Iraqis and the peoples of the region," Salih stated, according to the statement.

The President also stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral relations between Iraq and Iran and discussed ways to develop them.

For his part, Masjedi reiterated his country's support for Iraq and its keenness to promote cooperation between the two countries, praising Iraq's stances at international and regional levels.

Salih's speech

Salih said on Friday during the emergency summit that the regional and international crisis with Iran can turn into a war if we do not manage it properly and expressed the hope that Iran's security will not be targeted and asked the summit to support stability in Iraq.

Iran is a "Muslim and neighboring country to Iraq and Arabs. Certainly, we do not hope that its security become targeted as we (Iraq and Iran) are linked with 1,400 km of borders and various bonds and relationships," Salih stated.

"Sure, the security and stability of a Muslim neighboring country is part of the requirements and interests of the Arab and Muslim countries," he added.

Tensions between Iran and the US have continued to escalate, after a new video showed a secret underground missile base in Iran developing terrifying weapons.
