Muzahim al-Hewitt, spokesman of the Arab tribes in Nineveh denied claims
that the US has armed the Sunni tribes in Anbar, particularly in Nineveh.
Sheikh Hewitt said that the news in this regard are "void of truth and baseless."
However, Hewitt revealed negotiations with the American side to arm the Sunni tribes in all provinces, not only Anbar. He added that "the petition submitted by us is under the debate in Washington, and no decision has been issued by the American side to arm the tribes."
Brigadier-General Najm al-Jabouri, head of the Iraqi army’s Nineveh Operations Command, revealed earlier in May plans by the Iraqi military to arm citizens in 50 villages near Mosul so they can protect themselves.
