The parliamentary foreign relations committee is working on issuing an "important" law calling on the US and Israel to pay compensation for Iraq for past wars, a committee member said.

"We are working on passing an important law in the history of the Iraqi government. It is a great challenge for the Iraqi parliament and [it is] a law of an international character," MP Rami al-Sakini said at a news conference in the parliament.

"We called for, in the law, forming a higher committee to demand all the necessary compensation and damage [caused] by the wars launched by America and its allies, especially Israel, mainly in the years 1981, 1991 and 2003," Sakini said.

"The draft law consists of five chapters and 16 articles, which oblige the [prime minister] and the foreign ministry to demand before the international community compensation for the damage caused by the war launched by America and its allies," he said.

Sakini added these wars have destroyed all the infrastructure, referring to the "environmental pollution that occurred and caused hundreds of thousands of cancer cases, due to the use of internationally banned uranium."

He pointed out that "compensation is in accordance with the law retroactive materially and morally."
