Ghayath al-Sorachi, a leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, announced the Kurdistan Parliament's intention to open nomination for the president post during Wednesday's session of parliament.
The nomination process will continue for several days, Sorachi said.
After the vote of the Kurdistan Parliament to amend the law of the presidency of the region, the agreement includes opening nomination for the post, Sorachi said.
The political agreement between the main parties stipulates passing the Kurdistan Democratic Party's candidate, Nechirvan Barzani, for the presidency post, he added.
"The law of the presidency of Kurdistan allows all citizens to run and compete for the presidency," he said, adding that "the political consensus and the majority is what decide the matter in favor of the candidate."
