Parliament Speaker Mohamed al-Halbousi is reportedly working on establishing a new political party to represent the country’s Sunni Arabs on the forefront of the political competitions, news reports mentioned.
Halbousi is expected to announce his new political party early in June, to be called al-Taqaddum (Progress) Party, lawmaker from the Axis Alliance claimed. So far the party gained the support of 19 lawmakers.
Halbousi’s attempt to form a new party is the outcome of his trip to Washington earlier in March, he added.
According to political commentators, Halbousi’s initiative is to confront the hegemony of Shi’ite militias of the Iran Militia in Iraq and Syria (IMIS). He rather works to support the US agenda in the Sunni areas of Iraq, which is opposed by the pro-Iranian Shi’ite factions.
