Yusra Rajab, a member of the parliament's human
rights committee, on Monday called for taking urgent and effective measures to stop
suicide among young people, after it has recently spread.
"It is necessary to form a joint committee with the concerned authorities, including the ministries of health and labor and social affairs, in coordination with the provincial councils to address and [address] the serious painful phenomenon of suicide, which has spread in many provinces," Rajab said.
The rate of suicide cases, especially among the youths, has significantly increased as the economic situation across Iraq is further deteriorating, said a monitoring group.
Since the beginning of 2018 until 24th April of the same year, a total of 26 people committed suicide in Diyala province alone, said the head of Diyala Organization for Human Rights.
Poverty and unemployment are determined as the main reasons for the rise of suicide rate, Talib Khazraji said.
He suggested that the government should bring more investment projects to the province and also lower the age of retirement so the young generation could fill the vacant positions.
