MP calls for adopting new law to protect Iraqi children's rights

Yossra Rajab, a member of the parliament's human rights committee, affirmed the "necessity" of preparing a law that guarantees the rights of Iraqi children, adding that since 1994, Iraq has joined the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Rajab said that it is time for the government to pay more attention for children because of their rights guaranteed by the Iraqi Constitution and in accordance with the relevant international conventions. She also condemned the inhumane practices against children, adding that many children suffer the worst forms of torture and neglect.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs is preparing a draft to amend the Child Protection law, Rajab said, calling on the ministry to speed up its efforts in order for the draft law to be sent to the parliament.
