Around one million tons of rice is imported into Iraq coming from the Kurdistan Region annually, the KRG Planning and Follow-Up Department said.
More than 1.2 million tons of rice have been imported to Iraq, over the past three years. 98 percent of which came from Kurdistan Region border crossings, the department said.
The bulk of the rice imported comes from India, it added. In 2017, 550,000 tons came from India, 180,000 from Vietnam, 95,000 from Uruguay, 33,000 from the US, 29,000 from Thailand, 8,000 from Turkey and 7,000 thousand from Iran were imported.
It is estimated that around 85 percent of rice consumed in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region is imported.
