Speaker of Kuwait’s National Assembly Marzouq Ali al-Ghanem conveyed greetings from Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad to Iraq's President Barham Salih, wishing his country further progress and prosperity.
He said that neighboring countries have agreed to hold a conference in Baghdad to affirm their support for Iraq.
Ghanem arrived in Iraq on Wednesday on an official one-day visit, held official talks later with Iraqi leaders discussing a host of issues of common interest. He met with Salih at Salam Palace, KUNA reported.
The two sides, during the meeting, affirmed that the bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries would remain solid.
Earlier, Ghanem, along with his entourage, met with his Iraqi counterpart Mohammad Al-Halbousi. The discussions dealt with means of boosting cooperation between Kuwait and Iraq, particularly in the parliamentary field, according to media reports.
The talks addressed various files of common concern and regional and international issues, the reports said.
The Kuwaiti parliament speaker expressed, during the meeting with Halbousi, aspiration to see Iraq secure, prosperous and stable. Meanwhile, Halbousi expressed gratitude to Kuwait for supporting his country in the war on terrorism, backing the local political process and reconstructing the country.
Separately, Ghanem met the head of the supreme judicial council Faek Al-Abboudi, discussing a host of legal affairs.
Ghanem also met with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abd al-Mahdi, where the two sides discussed topics of mutual concern and means of boosting ties on all levels.
They also discussed resolving issues standing in the way of establishing economic partnerships between Kuwait and Iraq. The meeting was attended by the Speaker’s accompanying delegation and Kuwaiti Ambassador to Iraq Salem Al-Zamanan.
After departing Iraq, Ghanem is expected to head to Jordan on a two-day visit to Syrian and Palestinian refugee camps. He will be also attending the 29th Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union conference on Jerusalem on March 3-4 held in Jordan.
Relations with Kuwait
Despite the war fought between the two countries about three decades ago, Iraq and Kuwait have been keen to develop relations on various levels. Kuwait has been a major player in encouraging states to help Iraq to reconstruct cities that the latter could liberate of ISIS.
Moreover, Iraqi officials, including the president and the parliament speaker, held talks earlier in February over bolstering trade relations between the two brotherly states.
Barham Salih, during the meeting, called for following up on resolutions of the Kuwait-hosted international conference on rebuilding Iraq, praising Kuwait's aid for the relocated Iraqis and rebuilding war-damaged regions in the country, KUNA reported.
Meeting with visiting Kuwaiti Minister of Commerce and Industry Khaled al-Roudhan, Salih called for bolstering trade ties between the two countries.
