ISIS carries out ‘most violent attack’ against village, south of Shirqat

A fierce attack was carried out on a village, which triggered clashes between security forces and local residents against suicide bombers, north of Tikrit a security source was quoted saying on Saturday.

The attack, according to the source, took place late Friday night in the village of Namel, south of the town of Shirqat, the source added.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source described that attack as the most violent attack so far,” the source said, adding that police, backed by the Iran Militia in Iraq and Syria (IMIS) and residents managed to repulse the attack, carried out by ISIS militants, mostly suicide bombers.

In a statement, the Iraqi Security Media Cell said the attackers were wearing explosive belts and to target civilians in the village. No casualties were reported.

In December 2017, Iraq declared victory against the extremist group. However, dormant cells continues to launch regular attacks against security forces and civilians.
