Iraqi forces capture 24 ISIS militants in Nineveh after fleeing Syria

Iraqi security forces have captured 24 ISIS militants, who snuck into Iraq from Syria, the army said on Thursday.

In a press conference held within his visit to Nineveh's Operations Command Centre on Wednesday, the Iraqi Army's Chief of Staff Othman al-Ghanimi said four of the captured were group leaders in Nineveh.

Ghanimi stressed the need to take precautionary security measures to maintain security in the city of Mosul and other areas in the province.

The borders between Iraq and Syria have long been used by insurgent groups and ISIS militants for logistic support and to carry out cross-border attacks in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
