US to withdraw troops from Iraq if Baghdad asked: embassy

The US embassy in Baghdad said Tuesday that the US would withdraw its troops from Iraq, if the Iraqi government asked to, Anadolu Agency reported.

Recently, Iraqi political powers – majorly the Shiite ones – have called on Prime Minister Adil Abd al-Mahdi to order the expulsion of US troops from Iraq “in order to protect Iraq’s sovereignty,” they explain.

 

On February 15, Abd al-Mahdi issued a decree ordering security institutions to prevent friendly forces to roam inside Iraqi cities without his permission as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

 

Abd al-Mahdi has previously stated that there are no "pure" US military bases in the country.

Demands to accelerate US troops' expulsion from Iraq

A cleric of the Sadrist movement, Dhea al-Shouki called on the parliament to take serious steps to end the US presence in Iraq and ensure Iraq's full sovereignty. "The Iraqi Council of Representatives should take all necessary measures to meet this important vital demand," Shouki said in his sermon from the Great Mosque of Kufa.
