KDP wants independent Kirkuk governor: official

Kamal Kirkuki, a Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) official in Kirkuk, has expressed his party's desire to choose an independent governor for the province.

The Kirkuk Council will choose the governor and the KDP calls for an independent governor who is agreed upon by all parties, including the PUK, he added.

The meeting was at the invitation of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Kirkuki said, but disputes between some components and members, and the lack of quorum, led Kirkuk Provincial Council (KPC) chief Rebwar Talabani to postpone the meeting until achieving a consensus.

The KDP wants to re-normalize the situation in Kirkuk and to restore its headquarters in the city in order for the provincial council to be able to perform its duties, including the election of the governor, he said.

"The party is not ready to return to Kirkuk before the situation returns to normal," Kiruki stated.
