Iran starts reconstruction of Iraq’s Camp Ashraf to be used by IMIS: Reports

Camp Ashraf

An Iranian company has begun the reconstruction works at Camp Ashraf in Iraq where the opposition group of People’s Mujahedin of Iran (MEK) was stationed during the Baath era, news reports mentioned.

Residents in Diyala province have observed men and construction equipment at the camp, reportedly being turned into a military base by Ghadir Khom Construction Company, the reports said.

Iran is reportedly reconstructing the facility to be used as a military base by the Iran Militias in Iraq and Syria (IMIS).

The camp, of an area estimated at 50-square kilometer, was home to thousands of Mujahedin members who had fled Iran and joined Saddam Hussein to fight against Iran during the Iraq-Iran war (1988).
