Iraq supports Syria’s return to Arab League

Arab League

Iraq has expressed support toward restoring Syria’s membership to the Arab League, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

During a press conference held in Russia’s capital of Moscow, Foreign Minister Mohamed al-Hakim urged resolution for the Syrian crisis, calling for restoring its membership to the Arab League.

Syria’s membership was frozen in 2011 in the wake of Bashar al-Assad regime’s use of force to crush pro-democracy protests in the country. Recently, there have been increasing Arab calls for normalising ties with the Assad regime, including a visit by Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to Damascus, and the reopening of United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain embassies in the Syrian capital.

Hakim’s visit to Moscow came upon an invitation from Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov to discuss to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries as well as the regional and international issues.

On his part, Lavrov pledged to support Iraq in its fight against ISIS and to enhance the bilateral security ties
