More than 70,000 people with Iraqi citizenship registered for asylum in 2018, according to Ari Jalal, head of the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees (IFIR).

"Over 60,000 Iraqi refugees are [facing] the threat of forcible return, especially from the European countries of asylum," Jalal said, adding that "more than 35,000 refugees, mostly families, are living in hard conditions in the camps of Greece and the Balkans."

A number of 32 Iraqi refugees were returned last year from the United States, the Netherlands, Britain and Finland to Iraq, the IFIR head said, adding that other 17 citizens were handed by the Turkish forces to Nusra Front and armed forces loyal to the Turkish army, and then were returned to Iraq."
