Media Center announced on Tuesday that Twitter has suspended a fake account
impersonating Parliament Speaker Mohamed al-Halbousi. The account was followed
by over 25,000 people, the center said in a statement.
The account had misled users on Twitter, the statement said, adding that many foreign and Iraqi politicians have tagged the account in their tweets, including US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
The fake account was followed by dozens of Iraqi politicians and media personnel, the statement said, adding that it used a username that is very close to that of Halbousi's authentic account.
Twitter has sharply escalated its battle against fake and suspicious accounts, suspending thousands of accounts per day in the early months of 2018, a major shift to lessen the flow of disinformation on the platform.
