Iraq denies US airstrike killed 30 IMIS militants in Anbar

Iraq has denied news that US warplanes had carried out airstrikes against the Iran militias in Iraq and Syria (IMIS) in Anbar.

Several news outlets reported earlier that at least 30 IMIS militants were killed in a US airstrike near Sarsar lake in Anbar. However, The Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said in a statement that it investigated the incidents and found that those reports were “untrue”.

IMIS is composed of dozens of militia groups, most of them are Shia backed by Iran. They continuously threaten to attack the US forces in Iraq, if Washington denies to withdraw its troops after the end of ISIS war.

Media reports have been indicating an increase in the number of US troops in Iraq, especially in Anbar, on borders with Syria. Al-Assad military base, where US personnel are deployed, is considered one of the largest military bases in Iraq.
