PM says keen on achieving stability, security in Kirkuk

Adil Abdul Mahdi

Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi said on Monday that he is keen on achieving stability and security in Kirkuk, in the wake of the crisis that occurred as the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) raised Kurdistan’s flag over its headquarters in the province.

In a statement, Abdul-Mahdi’s office said, “the prime minister received a number of parliament members representing Kirkuk to discuss the issue of raising the Kurdish flag instead of Iraq's flag”

Abdul-Mahdi, according to the statement, “expressed deep interests on the stability of the security situation in the province and the coexistence among the people there.”

Last week, controversy broke out as PUK raised the Kurdistan flag on its offices in the disputed Kurdish province of Kirkuk.

The Kurdistan flag was prevented by Iraqi government from being on the public buildings since the military incursion, which took place on October 2017.
