Halbousi directs investigation into latest Sinjar incident

Parliament Speaker Mohamed al-Halbousi directed the parliament's Security and Defense Committee to investigate the situation in Sinjar.

On Monday, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) parliamentary bloc called on Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi to intervene to prevent the installation of a local authority in Sinjar district with the help of the KPP fighters, affirming that Nineveh Provincial Council is the legitimate authority that is in charge of choosing this authority.

"We strongly reject the installation of a new colonel for the Sinjar by force and with the help of the PKK fighters who are involved in forming the IMIS in the province without the approval of the Iraqi government and in violation to agreements with neighboring countries," the head of the bloc Bashar al-Kiki said in a press statement

The prime minister can prevent this because he is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and the person in charge of the state, Kiki said, adding that Abdul Mahdi "can make a decision to stop such chaos and farce."
