Abdul Mahdi directs bringing down Kurdistan flag in Kirkuk

Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi on Wednesday contacted a number of political leaders and directed them to bring down the Kurdistan flag the PUK earlier raised on its headquarters in the disputed Kurdish province of Kirkuk.

Abdul Mahdi also contacted Iraqi President Barham Salih, a PUK member, according to a statement by the prime minister's office, to put an end to the "unconstitutional" action the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan committed.

Abdul Mahdi told politicians that "the appropriate method is to consult with the Federal Supreme Court [of Iraq] whether such a step is constitutional before it is taken in case we want to respect the constitution."

Shortly after the PUK raised the flag, Iraqi counter-terror units in Kirkuk brought it down.
