Pompeo arrives in Erbil, meets Kurdish top leaders

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met on Wednesday with senior Kurdish leaders as part of his visit to Erbil.

Pompeo met with Masoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and former President of the Kurdistan Region. He also met separately with Kurdish Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) Masrour Barzani.

Earlier on Wednesday, Pompeo arrived in Baghdad where he met with a number of Iraqi high-level officials including President Barham Salih, Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi, Parliament Speaker Mohamed al-Halbousi, and Foreign Minister Mohamed al-Hakim.

The Secretary of State is touring Middle Eastern capitals, weeks after President Donald Trump’s abrupt announcement that he will pull all 2,000 US troops from Syria, which caused alarm among US allies in the region.

The visit was planned two weeks ago during the visit of President Trump to a US base in Iraq's Anbar on December 26, where he announced that his top diplomat would visit the country to meet Abdul Mahdi, inviting the latter to visit Washington.
