Shiite militias renew threats against US troops in Iraq

The Iranian Militias in Iraq and Syria (IMIS) has renewed calls for getting the US troops outside Iraq, saying they will target them.

Jawad Talibawi, a spokesperson for Asaib Ahl al-Haq, said on Monday that the legislative and executive authorities in Iraq should prepare for ousting the US troops from Iraq.

In remarks to the Iraqi media outlets, Talibawi was quoted as saying that they would forcibly expel the US forces if the Iraqi government and parliament fail to address the issue through diplomatic and legal procedures.

The Shi’ite leader also noted that a group of US forces were seen on Baghdad’s Mutanabi street earlier this week, calling the move “a violation of Iraq’s sovereignty”.

The Iraqi Shia militias, backed by Iran, often threaten targeting the US forces in Iraq. They argue that there is no need for the US personnel, especially that the war against the Islamic State is over.
