Berlin to donate €450k to rebuild Iraq's Aghawat mosque: German FM

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas announced Wednesday that his country would provide 450,000 euros until 2021 to rebuild the historic Aghawat mosque, after it had remained for three years under the control of ISIS.

The mosque, which dates back to the 18th century, is located next to a historic bridge over the Tigris River. Its large white dome makes it one of the most distinctive mosques.

Maas said that the reconstruction of the mosque in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) comes as part of Germany's contribution to support the peaceful coexistence in Iraq among religions and various religious institutions in Iraq.
