US Special Representative for Syria Engagement, James Jeffrey, asserted on Monday that US is seeking to end Iran military presence in Syria.
Jeffrey said during remarks at the Atlantic Council in Washington, DC, “We believe that Iran should withdraw from Syria," adding that they mean by Iran, the Iranian ground forces.
Although Jeffrey called for the ouster of Iranian forces, he said the United States accepted that Tehran would maintain some diplomatic role in the country.
"Iran will have diplomatic influence in Syria and it will increase as a result of a change in the relative balance of power between Syrian President Bashar Assad and Iran."
Moreover, he stated that the United States sees an opportunity this week for either a breakthrough or a complete breakdown in efforts to form a committee to draft reforms to Syria's constitution.
