Iraqi politicians call state officials to renounce their foreign citizenship

Former lawmaker and head of the Eradaa Movement Hanan al-Fatlawi has called on ministers and heads of political coalitions in Iraq to renounced their foreign citizenships.

On Sunday, an official statement said Iraqi President Barham Saleh officially abandoned his British citizenship in adherence to the Iraqi constitution.

Fatlawi said on Twitter that Saleh’s move deserves commendation as she expressed hopes that officials and politicians in Iraq would hopefully follow his lead.

The fourth clause of Article no. 18 of the Iraqi constitution stipulates, “An Iraqi may have multiple citizenships. Everyone who assumes a senior, security or sovereign position must abandon any other acquired citizenship.”

Furthermore, the Hekma Movement (Wisdom) has also called upon ministers and officials who have foreign citizenships to renounce them as president Saleh did.

MP for the movement, Ali Al-Bediery, added that the Parliament currently has a responsibility to force senior, security and sovereign positions holders to renounce their foreign citizenships lest they get excluded.
