Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi said Sunday that Japan will be an excellent partner for Iraq, as it has completed a lot of urban and service projects in Iraq.

During his meeting with a Japanese delegation headed by Kentaro Senoura, special advisor to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Abdul Mahdi said in a statement issued by his office that Iraq has a lot of interests and ambitious future projects with Japan.

Abdul Mahdi also praised the level of relations between the two countries and the support of Tokyo to Iraq in the fields of security, stability, reconstruction projects and economic and cultural cooperation.

The Prime Minister presented an initiative for partnership and economic and urban cooperation between the Iraqi and Japanese governments, including the establishment of a joint fund to finance reconstruction projects.

Iraq will support the fund through the Iraqi oil exported to Japan, while Japan are planned to encourage the well-known Japanese companies in Iraq, the Prime Minister said.

Abdul Mahdi said that the fund will further strengthen the relationship between the two countries, accelerate reconstruction efforts, establish economic projects, provide job opportunities for Iraqis, diversify Iraq's national wealth and reduce dependence on oil, and provide opportunities for Japan to be present in the Iraqi market and the region in general.

The Japanese official expressed his interest in the project, and said that he was present when Abdul Mahdi presented the project during his visit to Japan as Minister of Oil.

It was agreed during the meeting that the Iraqi side will submit explanation of the project through the Japanese Embassy in Baghdad to be studied by the Japanese authorities.
