Gov't to abolish term 'minority': Abdul Mahdi

Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi said that his government is about to pass a law abolishing the term "Iraqi minorities" and naming all religions and sects as part of efforts to stop discrimination between various components.

He also affirmed the importance of canceling the term "minority" to maintain the multiplicity of cultures and components of one unified country.

Abdul Mahdi stressed his insistence on abolishing the term in order to avoid discrimination of some components based on the small number of population.

On Wednesday, Abdul Mahdi, President Barham Salih and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Halbousi each received Yazidi activist Nadia Murad in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad to congratulate and honor her for winning the Nobel Peace Prize for 2018 and for her effective role in combating ISIS and violence against women and children.
