Six ministerial portfolios in Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi's cabinet are expected to be voted on during Sunday's parliamentary session, according to a member of parliament.
Fatah Alliance MP Abdul Amir Taiban stated that the parliamentary session on Sunday will witness voting on six of the remaining eight ministerial portfolios, with the exception of the two security posts.
Chaos has been ensuing Abdul Mahdi's attempts to complete his government for weeks, mainly over his nominations for the defense and interior ministries. Former IMIS commander Faleh al-Fayadh, Abdul Mahdi's choice for the interior post, is viewed as extremely controversial due to his crimes and his connections to the Iranian regime. While Iranian-backed political blocs are pushing for Fayadh's appointment, he has been rejected by popular Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and his Saairun Alliance.
While the security posts will not be voted on, Taiban added that the resolution of the defense and interior portfolios should not take a long time, especially in the presence an atmosphere seeking to resolve this file between Abdul Mahdi and leaders of different political blocs.
