Lebanese caretaker Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil visited Iraq as Baghdad is indebted to Beirut, a political source revealed.
Baghdad owes Lebanon $1 billion in debts, which have not been paid off for several years, the source said.
The Iraqi government has not denied these debts and has officially informed Lebanon about them, the source said, adding that Baghdad, however, has not paid them off yet and has not even clarified a plan for payment in the future.
This issue tops the talks of the Lebanese minister in Baghdad and will be presented to Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi to take a decision, the source added.
Bassil arrived in Baghdad on Monday on an official visit, during which he met with Abdul Mahdi. The two discussed a series of measures that would enhance relations between the two states, according to a statement from Bassil’s office.
