Iranian Parliament Speaker
Ali Larijani said that Iran is facing challenges that he described as
"chronic," which existed before the US sanctions were reimposed in
In a press conference on Monday, Larijani said, "External factors do affect our economy, but there are problems persisting from before," Radio Farda reported.
Larijani said that the country is facing many challenges, including a water crisis, "big, costly government", high interest rates that "disrupt production" and cash-strapped pension funds.
He added that the parliament's research center had "repeatedly warned" of these challenges, adding that the government has yet to respond to key issues though.
The US decided in May to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal and to subsequently reimpose sanctions on Iran. On November 5, the US reimposed sanctions on Iran's oil industry and financial sector.
