A senior Taliban commander was killed in the southern province of Helmand during a joint operation by Afghan and US special forces, Afghan officials said on Sunday.

Rahim Mannan, Taliban's leader who was in charge of Helmand, was killed along with 29 others in an air strike on Saturday, during his meeting with local commanders and fighters in Nawzad, the governor of Helmand, Mohammad Yassin said.

Taliban militants in the province of Helmand and the neighboring province of Kandahar confirmed the killing of the terrorist, while the US military has not yet confirmed the news, but said they are investigating the incident.

Mannan was Taliban's top commander in the south and his death would have a general impact on security, said a senior security official in Kabul.
