UAE to launch 1st commercial nuclear reactor in Arab world: FANR

The UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation announced Wednesday that the first commercial nuclear reactor in the Arab world will be ready to operate before 2020.

The regulator is waiting for the "readiness declaration" from the plant's operator, Christer Viktorsson, director-general of the FANR, said.

Viktorsson said that once Barakah Unit 1 is declared ready, inspected and tested for six months at least, then it can begin the commercial operations.

He said that the reactor will actually start loading fuel after obtaining the operating license, adding that the nuclear waste from the power plant will be stored in fuel pools for 10-20 years and then in "dry" storage for another 60 years.
