US has no better partner in Middle East than Saudi Arabia: Amb Jeffrey

Ambassador James Jeffrey, the US special representative for Syria engagement, said the United States has no better partner in the Middle East than Saudi Arabia.

While speaking at the Defense One Summit last Thursday, Jeffrey said that the US does not have a partner in the Middle East “better than Saudi Arabia” when it comes to countering Iran and fighting terrorism.

"We could not do what we were doing in the region without Saudi Arabia," he added.

Jeffrey also affirmed that the priorities in Syria now are defeating ISIS, removing all Iranian forces from the country and starting the peace process.

Last Wednesday, Jeffrey asserted that Iran’s continued military presence in Syria poses a threat to US partners in the region, telling reporters at the State Department that the withdrawal of Iranian troops from Syria is the only way to achieve a lasting peace in the war-torn country.

He also warned of the possibility of the Iranian Militias in Iraq and Syria (IMIS) becoming a “new ISIS”, adding that breaking Iran’s influence in the region is needed to counter this threat.
