Russia, Turkey, Iran to hold next round of talks on Syria in Astana

Kazakh foreign minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov
Russia, Turkey and Iran will hold the next round of Syria talks on Nov. 28-29 in the Kazakh capital, Astana, Kazakh foreign minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov said on Monday.

Delegations of the Syrian government and the armed opposition groups are also set to attend, Abdrakhmanov added.

Though there have been several international initiatives aimed at bringing the seven-year-war to an end, the latest round of Astana talks is aimed at establishing de-escalation zones in mainly opposition-held areas of the country, with Russia, Turkey and Iran acting as guarantors.

In Astana, nine rounds of talks were held to resolve the situation in Syria. The last meeting in the Astana format at a high level was held in Sochi on July 30-31.
