Diplomats said Saturday that the UN Security Council is preparing to lift sanctions on Eritrea after the United States backed down from its demands for an extension of measures against the East African country.

"Britain has submitted a draft resolution to the council calling for lifting the arms embargo and all travel bans, asset freezes and targeted sanctions on Eritrea. The council will vote on the proposed resolution in November, and diplomats expect it to be adopted after the US position has changed," Al Hurra reported.

Eritrea and Ethiopia signed a peace agreement in July, ending two decades of hostilities between the two countries, and they also improved relations with Djibouti and Somalia, which in turn contributed to stability in the Horn of Africa.
