Iranian Health Ministry revealed Monday the death of 84 people over the past six weeks after they had consumed illegally sold alcohol, ISNA reported.

About 1,000 people were poisoned of the bootleg alcohol over the same period, said the Health Ministry.

A number of 959 people had been treated for poisoning, while 305 people had been also treated for kidney damage, said Iraj Harirchi, spokesman for the ministry.

Harirchi revealed the main cause of the phenomenon, saying that it had happened due to the use of toxic methanol instead of ethanol.
