MP calls on FM Hakim to work on returning smuggled Iraqi antiquities

Illegal trade in Iraqi antiquities was a source of ISIS funding
Nineveh MP Rihan Hanna stated that antiques were smuggled from the province during the period of ISIS control and are now sold abroad, demanding the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to strive to have them returned and restored.

Hanna said in a press statement that Assyrian monuments, as well as valuable Christian monuments, were stolen from the Mosul Museum and are now being sold abroad.

"We call upon the new foreign minister, Mohamed al-Hakim, to start his ministerial program with an important and effective step in preventing the sale of Iraqi antiquities,” she said, stressing that the Iraqi antiquities are an invaluable national treasure requiring care to protect them and return them to Iraq as a sacred national duty.
