The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) revealed that
Iraq is ranked seventh in the world in the export of dates.
According to a report by the FAO, Egypt is currently the first in the world in date production with 1.4 million tons per year, or almost 20 percent of the world’s estimated 7.5 million tons of production. Egypt is followed by Iran and Saudi Arabia, while Iraq is comes in seventh place for the export of dates.
The report pointed out that the world’s date supply comes from about 30 countries, with the largest production taking place in the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asia, as well as the United States.
Dates are an important commodity for Arab countries, as the region’s hot weather is needed to grow dates, which are especially popular among Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan.
